SEDES 2012

Best Participation Award

The SEDES panel gathered right after the last presentation and voted for the best participation in this 2012 edition. Each member of the panel nominated independently the two best participations. Tiago Boldt Sousa, from INESC TEC/FEUP, whose submission was “Object-Functional Patterns: Re-Thinking Development in a Post-Functional World” awarded the majority of the votes, thus being the recipient of the award for the “Best Participation in SEDES’2012″.

Portuguese Software Engineering Doctoral Symposium
(Simpósio para Estudantes de Doutoramento em Engenharia de Software)

Hosted by QUATIC’2012 – 8th International Conference on the Quality of Information and Communications Technology

September 3rd, 2012 – IST/UTL, Lisbon, Portugal

Call For Papers

Introduction

The goal of the SEDES doctoral consortium is to provide Software Engineering PhD students supervised or co-supervised by faculty members of Portuguese Universities with an environment in which they can present and discuss their work, receive feedback and suggestions from faculty and peers, and network with other researchers in the field. Besides being an opportunity to gather the Portuguese community that develops research in Software Engineering, both in academic or industrial settings, SEDES also aims at fostering international cooperation with Software Engineering faculty members from other countries, by means of joint co-supervisions.

This is the 4th edition. The previous three editions took place in:

  • Coimbra, 2004, hosted by the 1º Congresso Português de Engenharia de Software;
  • Caparica, 2007, hosted by the 6th International Conference on the Quality of Information and Communications Technology (QUATIC’2007);
  • Porto, 2009, hosted the the 4th International Conference on Software Engineering Advances (ICSEA’2009).

Submissions to SEDES’2012 will be reviewed following the same procedures used for the regular papers in peer-reviewed events. Reported results might not be final, neither complete, but should clarify how the state-of-the-art will be advanced. A submission should foreshadow potentially novel and promising results. Observations and criticisms from panel, as well as from the remaining audience during the SEDES sessions, are expected to consolidate the direction of the research work.

Selected submissions will be published in the hosting conference proceedings by Conference Publishing Services (CPS), and will be scheduled for oral presentation in the program. Therefore, it is assumed that a submission shows the intention that at least one author registers for the hosting conference.

Eligibility / List of Topics

To be eligible for participation in SEDES, PhD students must have concluded at least the first year of their doctoral programs and be doing research in Software Engineering, covering at least one of the knowledge areas defined in SWEBOK, the Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (http://www.swebok.org). Research work in related fields such as Computer Science (including formal methods) and Information Systems (including Information Services variants) are considered within the scope of SEDES if they hold an applied perspective on the technological or methodological issues of software development or maintenance.

Instructions for Candidates

You must prepare a submission with two parts: a paper describing the research work (both past and future) and a plan for it.

Paper

The paper should be in English and co-authored by your supervisor(s). At least one of the supervisors must be affiliated to a Portuguese University. The format and editorial recommendations are similar to those of the regular submissions to QUATIC’2012 thematic tracks (see QUATIC CFP instructions at http://2012.quatic.org). The paper should have a maximum of 6 pages and include the following sections:

  • Title
  • Keywords [SWEBOK related KAs]
  • Abstract
    1. Introduction
    2. State-of-the-art
    3. Research objectives and methodological approach
    4. Past work and preliminary results
    5. Future work and expected results
    6. Conclusions
  • References

Notes:

  • Both the past and future work sections should concisely describe the validation of the results;
  • The future work section should not include expected work beyond the delivery of the dissertation.

Plan

The work-plan for the full schedule of the PhD research period (from the beginning, till the expected end) must represent, in a monthly basis scale, (i) activities, (ii) their dependencies and (iii) their deliverables (e.g. technical reports, papers, dissertation chapters, prototypes). We suggest you use standard diagramming techniques such as Gantt, PERT and/or CPM charts.

Submission

The submission will be a zipped file called NameSurname.zip (e.g., AntonioSilva.zip), containing the two documents (paper and plan), both in PDF format. The submission site is the same as for QUATIC’2012, in the track corresponding to SEDES. As the designated correspondence author, you will then receive a first e-mail message containing access instructions that will enable you to change information about your submission and your personal information, view your reviews and submit the camera ready.

Review Process

At least two SEDES PC members will blind-review each submission, focusing on the quality, maturity and clarity of the ongoing research work, both in terms of scope delimitation and problem relevance, adequacy of the adopted methodology, results significance and their validation, technical writing style, etc. Accepted candidates are expected to submit a final version of the proposal, taking into account the comments and suggestions provided by the reviewers. This paper will be published in the conference proceedings.

Doctoral Consortium Format

The main focus of the consortium will be on (i) providing doctoral students with feedback on their work, (ii) improving their ability to present it to an evaluation panel and (iii) assessing the adequacy and feasibility of their research plan. In order to ensure a profitable discussion during the workshop, a maximum of 8 participants will be selected. Each of the latter will be assigned a 45 minutes slot, including 15 min for a slide-based presentation and 30 minutes for discussion with panel opponents and colleagues. Therefore, in preparation for the symposium, each accepted candidate must read all other papers, to be able to ask relevant questions to colleagues during the sessions, when drawn randomly with the “hat-trick” technique.
